Additional Information

This workshop explores how photography can become a simple mindfulness practice that helps us slow down and experience the visual world more fully.

Rather than focusing on technical camera skills, we will use photography as a tool for cultivating awareness. Through guided meditation, short talks, and photography practice sessions around downtown Omaha, participants will learn to notice light, color, and ordinary details with fresh attention.

The emphasis is not on creating perfect images, but on developing a new way of seeing.

Participants will explore:

• Using photography as a mindfulness practice

• Learning to notice light, shadow, color, texture, shape, and gesture

• Slowing down and becoming more aware of the visual world

• Observing how we respond to what we see

• Cultivating creativity and curiosity in everyday life

The workshop includes guided meditation, short talks on mindful seeing, and guided photography walks through downtown Omaha.

Participants may discover moments, details, and visual relationships they might normally overlook. The workshop invites a slower way of seeing that can inspire participants to continue exploring photography as a daily awareness practice.

What This Workshop Is (and Isn’t)

This is not a technical photography class and not a critique session.Instead, it is an experiential workshop focused on cultivating mindful seeing and creative awareness. Photography is simply the tool we use to explore perception.

Instructor

This workshop is led by photographer and mindfulness meditation teacher Kyle Sorys, who has been exploring the intersection of meditation and photography for more than a decade. He has been practicing meditation since 2008 and photography since 2011.

Kyle studied contemplative psychology and chaplaincy at Naropa University and later completed the digital photography program at Metro Community College. Since 2019 he has been teaching mindfulness and meditation and currently facilitates Flow of Stillness, a Thursday evening meditation group at Flatwater.

Over time, this integration of photography and mindfulness transformed how he experiences the world — becoming more aware of light, shadow, and the subtle details of everyday life. Meditative photography has become a daily practice that cultivates presence, curiosity, and engagement with the visual world.

This workshop shares that practice in a playful and accessible way.
